AbsFest Weekend

hat is ABSFest? The Americana Burlesque & Sideshow Festival is now in our TWELFTH year of celebrating the Vaudeville Revival here in Asheville. Three thousand people have reveled in the company of our satin and sparkle, our unicorn-feathered starlets and our fish-eyed zombie boys.

Nominated for Best Show in the Mountain Xpress Readers Choice Awards, ABSFest has attracted renowned circus and burlesque artists from across the USA, as well as Scotland, Germany, and Japan. We offer fashion, contortion, trapeze, and tease!

In a world now brimming with Burlesque Festivals, from Vegas to Amsterdam, ABSFest is known for embodying the true spirit of Vaudeville and nurturing creativity and empowerment.

The festival is one of several annual productions of Future of Tradition, a seminal force in the underground Asheville arts community since 1999. ABSFest has spawned a sister event, the Virginia Burlesque & Sideshow Festival in Richmond, VA, now in its third year, and festival Producer Lauren ‘Madame Onça’ O’Leary travels internationally teaching and performing bellydance, music and stagecraft.

Scares That Care Charity Weekend 5

1) Who are you and what do you do?

“Scares That Care!” Inc., is an IRS approved, 501(c)(3) charity. Founded in 2006, “Scares That Care!” to date has raised and donated over $120,000 to organizations that treat sick children and families with a child affected by illness, burns or women fighting breast cancer. “Scares That Care!” is also proud of the fact that we are an all volunteer organization, with no salaries or paychecks issued to any staff member involved with the charity. If you’d like more information, please visit our home website scaresthatcare.org

2) So why a horror event?

The Scares That Care Charity Weekend was originally a horror event designed to delight horror fans while benefiting those in need. Now, because of the increasing attendance from fan bases outside of horror, we are starting to transition to a genre event and will continue to morph as feedback points in the direction to continue positive growth.

“Scares That Care!” is an IRS approved, 501(c)(3) charitable organization, designed to bring together the fans of “all things spooky.” Whether it’s haunted houses, paranormal, horror films, or anything else in the “vein” of the horror genre, “Scares That Care!” brings together those individuals in order to give back to the families that need it most…and in turn, become “Good Ambassadors of Horror.”

The difference between our event and the other, fantastic shows that are out there, is simple. All of our proceeds will go to the families that need our assistance. We pride ourselves in being an organization that has no salaries, and no paychecks. We do this because it’s the right thing to do, and we want to represent the Horror community in the best light possible.

TideWater Comic Con 2018

  • virginia beach convention center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Tidewater Comicon is the brainchild of founder Mike Federali who wanted to see a local comic book convention become a reality so bad he sold his entire comic book collection at garage sales, flea markets (and even on AMC’s Comic Book Men) to make the show possible. The first show was a one day hotel show with an over capacity crowd. Fans gathered, met creators, had a blast, and left with only one complaint.. More Space!

Thanks to the yard sales, fundraisers, Tidewater Comicon moved to the Virginia Beach Convention Center where it has continued to grow each year in space and attendance. In 2016, following an impressive Kickstarter campaign, the show reached it’s highest attendance so far with 23,000 fans.

JOE GREENE
DESIGNER

Big Boi Fly is a fashion wave representing all different sizes of men from 2x to 6x.

“Every time I look in a magazine, or look online for clothes, I see people advertising a big and tall section, but then they have a model in a large shirt and just say that the shirt goes to 4X. I never see how it looks on a 4X person. I want to see how the clothes look on me personally.”

Joe Greene grew up in Asheville and attended Asheville High School. After surviving a tough adolescence, he worked hard to turn his life around and become a vocal champion for the local African-American community. He is an entrepreneur and has been involved in numerous community outreach programs in the city, including Asheville Goombay Festival, the Funny R’ Us comedy show and the My Daddy Taught Me That youth outreach program. He also recently became a member of the Civic Center Commission, a city-appointed group that makes recommendations for the management and use of the U.S. Cellular Center.

Wizarding Weekend

Wizarding Weekend

When the Whomping Willows that line the Cayuga Lake Inlet were turning gold with autumn, a magical festival was born in Downtown Ithaca. Gabe, an employee at Boxy Bikes and his younger brother (Aiden) hatched the idea to transform Press Bay Alley into Diagon Alley for trick or treating; of course, everyone at Press Bay loved the idea, as it is already a place filled with whimsy and wonder.

What no one knew at that time was how inspiring the Harry Potter universe would be! Within days the event went viral online and thousands of people RSVP’d. This was not going to be a quaint trick or treat for a few dozen kids: families and fans from hours around wanted to come to Ithaca for a magical escape.

Quickly, Darlynne Overbaugh of Life’s So Sweet Chocolates, Bill Overbaugh of Ehrhart Energy, Laurence Clarkberg of Boxy Bikes, and John Guttridge of Press Bay Alley got to work. They brought Cornell University’s Raptor Club, a Flying Ford Anglia, and myriad vendors, performers and volunteers to downtown Ithaca–all with only days to sculpt a truly magical world, because by this time, MTV and national news outlets had picked up the story. More than 8,000 people were planning to attend.

When the big day arrived, no one quite knew what would happen. People arrived in outlandish costumes, their enthusiasm and their love of Harry Potter creating a community instantly. Local business owners rolled with the situation creating interesting products for guests to purchase. The Downtown Ithaca Alliance and volunteers pitched in to help. Wizarding duels, dragons, magic, owls, wizard chess, and wands truly enchanted Press Bay Alley for a day. Visitors received acceptance letters to Hogwarts, found their Houses, traversed the downtown in search of Horcruxes, and teams fought it out in a bicycle-based quidditch bout. Downtown Ithaca was giddily transformed into a magical world.

In the end, it was the imagination of people who brought out the magic in Ithaca. And it will happen again this October.
